The Lisbon School Committee is scheduled to hold a special meeting tonight to give direction on a spending proposal that it will bring to the town council.
The school committee struggled at a special meeting Aug. 24 with how to develop the spending plan that it will pass to the council for a vote, before going onto a budget validation referendum.
The school committee’s initial proposed budget was lowered by the council and in turn failed at a June 9 referendum. The majority of opposition indicated on their ballots that the budget was too low. The council reduced the second proposal the school committee proposed as well, resulting in a much smaller turnout of voters rejecting this budget at an Aug. 11 referendum.
The budget validation referendums will continue until a budget is adopted by voters, Superintendent Richard Green said at the Aug. 24 meeting.
Green said on Friday, Aug. 28, that he will be looking for a directive from the school committee.
Green said last week that tentatively, a public hearing on the latest budget would be held Sept. 15 and the budget validation referendum on Sept. 22.
The council is scheduled to set a date on the budget validation referendum and public hearing during its meeting Tuesday night.
Tonight’s meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the town office.
The school committee will also consider the resignation of Business Manager Catherine Messmer from the school district effective Sept. 7.
An executive session is scheduled for the end of the meeting.
