I am relieved to learn that a sexual assault apparently did not take place at Back Cove (“Woman recants report of being raped along Portland’s Back Cove Trail,” Aug. 13).

Let’s view this good news as a reprieve – a chance to prevent attacks by improving security along the path.

Let’s take an assailant’s-eye view of every bit of the course and remove the vegetative cover present at the sketchiest parts. Eliminate places to hide.

Start at the spur that links the main path east to Veranda Street, where a dark tunnel of foliage near the highway poses a real danger. And cut out all that vegetation near Franklin Street.

The Back Cove path is a sweet, special place, one of Portland’s great assets. Those who use it must be able do so with absolute confidence that they are safe.
