David Rosenfelt will be at the Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, to talk about and sign copies of his two new books, “Lessons From Tara: Life Advice from the World’s Most Brilliant Dog” and “Who Let the Dog Out?”
Rosenfelt’s loyal readers of the Andy Carpenter series are familiar with Tara, the golden retriever sidekick. Many also got to know Tara from “Dogtripping,” his nonfiction book about becoming a slightly nutty dog rescuer and the dog that started it all. Here is a book all about the inspirational canine who taught Rosenfelt everything he knows. Through Tara, Rosenfelt learned about dating, about being able to share his emotions, and also about everyday stuff like who gets to use the pillow if several dogs are sleeping in one’s bed (clue: It’s not the human) and why random barking will never be something that can be eliminated. “Lessons From Tara” is infused with wry and selfdeprecating sense of humor, and will move readers to tears and laughter.
Rosenfelt graduated from New York University and then decided to work in the movie business. After being interviewed by his uncle, who was the President of United Artists, he was hired and worked his way up the corporate cultural ladder. He eventually became the marketing president for Tri- Star Pictures. He married and had two children, left the corporate industry and wrote screenplays for movies and television. He turned to writing mystery novels and has become quite successful in that genre.
About 14 years ago, Rosenfelt and his wife started the Tara Foundation, named, according to the author, “in honor of the greatest Golden Retriever the world has ever known.” They have rescued almost 4,000 dogs, many of them Goldens, and found them loving homes. Their own home quickly became a sanctuary for those rescued dogs that were too old or sickly to be adopted. They surround him as he writes, safely and happily. He often participates in fundraisers to help support local animal shelters. He and his wife and their dogs live in Jefferson, Maine.
