At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta will present internationally acclaimed artist Alex Katz in conversation with Newcastle artist Jane Dahmen. Katz is a wellknown artist whose work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions internationally since 1951.

The evening will begin with a screening of a short documentary of Alex Katz painting a six by 14-foot triptych of a landscape which includes the face of his wife, Ada, the subject of many of Katz’s paintings. This will be followed by a discussion of his techniques, love of style and appearance and his choice of billboard size images taken from his social life in New York City and Maine.

Alex Katz came onto the New York art scene in the 1950s when Abstract Expressionist painters reigned supreme.

“I knew I had to go with what I saw, the objective world, and that was what I was going to paint and that was all there was to it,” he said. 1ncolnville, Maine.

Katz has received many accolades, among them, a lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy Museum, New York in 2007.

In 2005, Katz was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Colgate University, Hamilton, NY and in 1984, a Doctorate of Fine Arts from Colby College, Waterville, Maine.

In 2001, he was named the Philip Morris Distinguished Artist at the American Academy in Berlin and in 2000, he received the Cooper Union Annual Artist of the City Award.

In 1994, Cooper Union created the Alex Katz Visiting Chair in Painting.

In 1988, Katz was inducted into the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Alex Katz’s paintings are part of the collections of museums all over the world.
