On behalf of the Great Works Foundation, Inc. and the Sanford Regional Technical Center, I want to sincerely thank the Sanford Housing Authority and its board of directors for allowing our students and staff the opportunity to be fully involved as the general contractor in planning and constructing their new office building on 17 School St., Sanford. With little fanfare, their new administrative building was up and operational on the week of June 15.
Educational, financial and community impact:
Ӣ Over the last two and half years approximately 250 SRTC students have worked on this project. Tours for another 185 students in grades K-8 were given during the construction phase. Area contractors that were used on this project also served as mentors for our students during their phase of construction. (Landscaping will be completed when our horticulture students return this fall).
Ӣ 17 School St. was a blighted property in the center of the city and today an architectural period building sits in its place.
”¢ The new office building will generate an additional $10,000 in property taxes, bringing the Housing Authority’s tax bill to nearly $160,000 this year.
We, students, GWF and SRTC are also proud to have been part of the restoration of City Square along with the extension of Central Park and the redevelopment of the Soucie property by Rob Reinken.
We also want to thank the city departments that have been so helpful to us, throughout this project, especially the Planning, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation Departments. A special thank you goes to Petrona, Inc. for overseeing this project with us.
This has been a hands-on, real life learning experience for all involved students.
The Sanford Housing Authority made this all possible.
