SCARBOROUGH – This week Scarborough’s marine resource officer, Dave Corbeau, rescued several boaters who had gotten into trouble on the Nonesuch River, according to a press release from the police department.

On Monday, Aug. 3, Corbeau was out on the river collecting water samples when he noticed two kayakers in distress. The two, one of whom did not have a lifejacket, were struggling against the swift tide near the railroad trestle.

The tide was high and estimated to be running at 17 knots, and combined with the pilings, it made for a very dangerous situation, the press release said. In fact, one of the kayakers did overturn and became pinned against a piling.

Corbeau was able to pull both kayakers into his boat, at which point he discovered another set of kayakers also pinned under the trestle against the pilings. Using a long pole, Corbeau was able to push the kayakers around the pilings, and through to the other side where they continued up river.

The two kayakers in Corbeau’s boat were pulled up onto the safety of the railroad track, where they waited for help from fire department personnel. The other two kayakers were also picked up further down river by firefighters.

“We are happy to report that although this was a scary situation for all involved, no one was injured, and the (town) boat received only minor damage,” the press release added.
