Thumbs up for the grant in Wells that funds a research project called “Who Owns the Beach?” The study of historical beach access and deeds could bolster the legal case for public access to private beaches. The public needs all the advocacy and historical context it can get in order to expand access to arguably Maine’s best natural resource.
Thumbs up to all the J-1 Visa students who come to the area to work summer jobs. Thumbs up also to the Old Orchard Beach Community Watch Council and other officials who are providing support to the foreign workers.
Thumbs up to the Women Work and Community organization that helps teach those thinking of starting a business some of what it takes to do so, and to the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce and Industry for providing space for the classes. Starting and maintaining a business isn’t easy; gleaning all the knowledge available first can save some headaches later.
Thumbs up to the City of Sanford and Synergize Sanford for celebrating the opening of Gateway Park tonight by lighting up the waterfall. The falls haven’t been able to be fully seen for years, until the park was created at the juncture of Riverside Avenue and Washington Street, and opened just a couple of weeks ago. The celebration starts at 7:30 p.m.
Thumbs up to all the folks who volunteer to answer the call when the fire alarm sounds or the tone goes out for an ambulance call. Folks lead busy lives these days ”“ jobs are demanding, parenting is a huge responsibility and training requirements for first responders are hefty. Volunteers are the lifeblood of these services, especially in rural communities. So thanks, folks.
