Martin’s Point opens land to public

Martin’s Point Health Care has granted the use of more than 14 acres of open land to the town of Gorham for public use.

The land was acquired by Martin’s Point when it constructed and opened its new center last year at 575 Main St. The open space will be used specifically for recreational activities that have a low impact on the environment such as hiking, picnicking, nature observation and other educational uses.

The land, which sits behind the health care center, is located at the intersection of Main Street (Route 25 and Mosher Road (Route 237) and can be accessed from the property’s driveway.

“We are very pleased to provide a conservation area for the community to enjoy, especially as so many cities and towns are having a difficult time securing open, public green space,” said Dick Daigle, vice president of Support Services at Martin’s Point. “As a health-care organization, we recognize the positive impact that enjoying the outdoors has on personal health and well-being. We are very proud to be able to provide this land to the town of Gorham.”

Dr. Robert Lavoie, Gorham Conservation Committee chairman, said, “This land easement really helps our efforts to create a connected, multi-use trail network for the town of Gorham.”

Future development plans for the open land will be coordinated by the town.

Martin’s Point said in a statement it is committed to building strong communities through its work with patients, its health plan members, and others. In addition, Martin’s Point also provides paid volunteer time off to its employees, encouraging them to serve the community.
