The impact of Brunswick Naval Air Station on neighborhood cemeteries will be discussed when the Pejepscot Genealogical Society hosts the Maine Old Cemetery Association Summer Program in Brunswick on July 25.

The event is scheduled at the United Methodist Church, 320 Church Road in Brunswick. Registration is from 8:30-9:15 a.m. President Clyde Berry will open the meeting followed by two presentations and lunch at noon. A MOCA business meeting also is planned. In the afternoon, participants are invited to visit the Pine Grove Cemetery, the final resting place of Joshua Chamberlain and other prominent Brunswick families.

The morning speakers will feature Barbara Desmarais, local historian and cemetery researcher. The local society will present a program concerning their involvement with the Gatchell Cemetery, including the history and present day accessibility of the lot. The interconnection of families buried there as well as some information on unmarked and poorly marked graves will be included.

The Maine Old Cemetery Association is comprised of nearly 700 paying members and more than 1,100 Facebook friends, all focused on preserving and researching the old cemeteries of Maine. The organization was founded in 1968 by the late Hilda Fife.

Registration for the program is $3 at the door, and is open to all.

Membership in MOCA can be paid at the program or online at www.moca-me.org Annual membership is $7, $30 for five years, and $150 for lifetime membership. Membership includes a quarterly newsletter with updates on cemetery-related projects and goals, as well as communication with researchers.

Lunch by a local Girl Scout troop will feature a classic menu of a “Baked Bean Suppa.” Lunch is $7 payable at the door.
