Terms for both the chairwoman of the Freeport Town Council and the chairman of the Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors are up for grabs Nov. 3 – two of nine positions residents will vote on in the municipal elections.

Nomination papers will be available at the Town Office beginning on Monday, July 27, and must be returned no later than 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

Melanie Sachs, an at-large member of the Town Council, has been chairwoman since last November, when the council elected her to succeed James Hendricks. Andrew Wellen, District 4 councilor, also will be up for election in November. Both positions are three-year terms.

Nelson Larkins has served as chairman of the RSU 5 board twice. He finished second in a three-way race for a Freeport seat on the board in November. But Peter Murray, who was chairman of the Freeport Withdrawal Committee, resigned following a close vote in November not to withdraw from RSU 5. The Town Council appointed Larkins to fill the vacancy, and then the board re-elected him as chairman. The position is for one year. The terms of Freeport board members Karin VanNorstrand and John Morang, both for three years, also expire this year.

The Freeport ballot also will include voting for three seats on the Sewer District trustees – all for three years – and one position with the Water District trustees, also for three years. Terms on the Sewer District board for Leland Arris III, Darrel Fournier and Clint Goodenow all expire in January.
