Tall ships to draw crowds at Fort Williams

On Saturday, July 18, the “tall ships” are coming to Portland Harbor at 1:45 p.m., beginning with a “Parade of Sail” past Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth. Up to 14 ships are expected to sail in the parade, stretching out single file for more than 2 nautical miles. Large crowds are expected at Fort Williams Park during the event. Several roads in nearby neighborhoods, including Shore Road, will be posted “no parking.” Motorists should expect traffic delays in and around Fort Williams.

The vessels are expected to be secure at their docks by 4 p.m. The ships can also be seen from three locations in South Portland, including Bug Light Park, Willard Beach and Southern Maine Community College. Library offers kid’s crafts

The Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth is offering summer craft programs for kids on Thursday, July 16, and Friday, July 17. On Thursday, at 3:30 p.m., kids ages 10 and up can make a 3D aquarium out of a CD case, and on Friday, beginning at 10:30 a.m., kids will have the chance to make “HeroBots and Starcruisers” out of everyday materials.

Audubon seeks bird monitors

The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center will hold its annual bird survey on Saturday, July 18, 7:30-10:30 a.m. Volunteer bird monitors are needed to help Audubon staff. Anyone interested in helping out should call 883-5100 for more information.

The goal of the event is to survey and document the number of individual birds and bird species. Timed to catch the beginning of shorebird migration, each group of monitors will be assigned a portion of the marsh to survey.

Depending on the assignment, surveys may be done on foot, by car or from a canoe, which will be provided at the Audubon center. Beginning birders are also welcome. The morning will start with a brief introduction and after that, monitors will disperse to their assigned sections.

Cape library closed for construction

From Monday, July 20, through Saturday, Aug. 1, the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth will be closed for construction.

The library is undergoing a $4 million renovation and expansion project. Library staff encourages patrons to make use of the libraries in South Portland and Scarborough for the duration of the closure.

Chronic pain management workshop set

Registration is now open for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s next chronic pain management workshop series. The program begins on Tuesday, July 21, at 1 p.m. and will run through Aug. 25. Call 396-6583 to register or for more information.

Millions of people are diagnosed with conditions that cause chronic pain every year and that pain often restricts their activities. That’s why the agency on aging is offering a six-week course on how to manage chronic pain and start feeling better.

During the workshop series, participants will learn a gentle stretching program and review tips for improving communication with doctors and caregivers, sleep, nutrition, relaxation and much more.

In addition, participants will be encouraged to try new things, set and track goals and learn about strategies to improve their symptoms and their outlook on how to manage their health.

Northern Stars Planetarium show at library

The Scarborough Public Library will host a program by the Northern Stars Planetarium on Tuesday, July 21.

A star lab will be installed in the center of the library for the show “Sandy, Pepper and the Eclipse,” which offers spectators a look at the relationship between the Earth, moon and sun.

Healthy beaches volunteers needed

The town of Scarborough and the Maine Healthy Beaches program are looking for volunteers willing to sample the water at Pine Point and Ferry beaches between now and Labor Day.
