GEORGETOWN — John Arthur “Jay” Holt received the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment 2015 Visionary Award for Maine for his “outstanding leadership and long standing efforts to protect natural resources in the Gulf of Maine as the Coordinator of the Georgetown annual coastal clean-up and (his) ongoing advocacy for a clean, green Maine clam fishery.”

The award is presented to persons or organizations from each of the Gulf of Maine jurisdictions — Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts — and recognizes innovation, creativity, and commitment to marine businesses and economic development in the Gulf of Maine. As a member of Georgetown’s Conservation Commission, Holt spearheaded the annual coastal clean-up efforts, coordinating with groups from Bowdoin College and other organizations to gather and document the debris that lands on local shores. This effort helps to identify sources of pollution which can lead to better abatement at the source. Holt also serves on the Georgetown Shellfish Conservation Committee.
