On Saturday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m., the Denmark Arts Center is hosting the Tophat Toy Theater, a one-man miniature theater presenting the great works of the classical Broadway canon using action figurines manipulated on tiny, elegant sets.

Working with his mother, set designer and costumer Polly Plimpton, David Worobec has build a cultish following around his unique oeuvre in his native Portland, where he has mounted full musical productions of such A-list fare as “South Pacific,” “Les Miserables,” and “Oklahoma,” all using a cast that fits in a small box.

In “Les Mis,” for instance, the Thenerdiers were “played” by figures of Beetle-Juice and Disney’s Cruella de Ville. “I love to sing and perform. I feel like I’m in another world, like time and space and reality are just far away,” explains Worobec. “Doing these shows is…the way I played as a kid.”

Worobec and Plimpton will perform the quintessential 1970s-era rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” with tickets $12 each. Seating will be in the round, to allow for intimate access to the tiny stage, and patrons are encouraged to bring their own food, drink, and passion for theater.
