Land trust hosting auction

The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust is holding its 8th annual Paint for Preservation Auction and reception 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, at the Garrison Field estate on Pulpit Rock Road.

Proceeds from newly painted pieces of art will benefit the land trust’s Saving Cape’s Great Places initiative, which supports local land conservation. The event will also include live music, refreshments and catered hors d’oeuvres.

In addition, an original oil painting of the historic Spurwink River, the site of Cape Elizabeth’s first settlement, will be available during the silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the town’s 250th anniversary concert on July 25.

Reservations are encouraged as the event has sold out nearly every year. Tickets, which are available online or at the land trust office at 330 Ocean House Road, are $60 in advance or $70 on the day of the auction.

Got hazardous materials?

Residents of Scarborough, Saco and Old Orchard Beach can drop off their unwanted household hazardous waste at the Saco Public Works Department, 8 a.m.-noon, on Saturday, July 11.

The public works facility is located at 351 North St. and proof of residency is required. All waste should be in sealed containers or cardboard boxes.

Acceptable items include fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, furniture polish, button batteries, rechargeable batteries, wood stains, paint thinner, oil-base paint, insect sprays, pesticides, anti-freeze, brake fluid, kerosene and more.

Unacceptable items include any health-related waste, tires, computers, explosives, smoke detectors, latex paint and unknown materials. Call 284-6641 for more information.

Health series needs leaders

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers willing to lead its ongoing Living Well for Better Health workshop series.

A free volunteer training session will be held starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, at Portland City Hall. Pre-registration is required and those interested should contact Crystal Castro at 396-6529 or ccastro@smaaa.org.

Workshop leaders help people dealing with chronic health conditions gain the tools to manage their health and get back to feeling better.

Citizen-scientist surveyors needed

The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center needs volunteer, citizen scientists to assist in its annual plant and insect survey, which will be held on Saturday, July 11, 9 a.m.-noon.

Join local experts and search for the many different types of plants and insects, including butterflies and dragonflies, that call the marsh home. A short training session will be offered before volunteers head out.

Participants can choose plants or insects to survey. After the surveys are complete, the two groups will reconvene and discuss their results. The data collected will be used to serve as an indicator of the health of the marsh.

Sunset canoe tour offered

The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center will hold a sunset canoe tour on Sunday, July 12, at 7 p.m. The cost is $12 for members and $14 for non-members. The cost for children is $10 and $12 respectively,

Join the Audubon for a guided canoe tour at sunset and explore the marsh at this beautiful time of day. See the reflection of the setting sun on the calm waters of the Dunstan River, observe the herons and shorebirds flying back to their roosts and enjoy the sounds of the evening marsh.

This time of day is known as the golden hour and as the sun sets on the marsh, you will be able to experience its beauties in a new light.

Society seeks fair donations

The Scarborough Historical Society is seeking donations of various goods for its annual fair later this summer.

Donations can be dropped off at the historical society museum in Dunstan on Saturday, July 11, 9 a.m.-noon, or any Tuesday, also 9 a.m.-noon, between now and Aug. 1.

The society will gladly accept books and baked goods, along with clean, gently used clothes, flea market items, collectibles and more. However, no electronic items, including computers, or Reader’s Digest condensed books and encyclopedias, will be accepted.

Library offers summer reading programs

The Scarborough Public Library will offer two special summer reading program events on Wednesday, July 15. Both are free and open to the public. See www.scarboroughlibrary.org or call 883-4723 for more information.

The first program, “Classical Myths and Maps,” will be offered at 3:30 p.m. and the second, “4H Science Kitchen,” which is designed for teens, will be held at 6 p.m. Both require pre-registration.

Maps can tell us more than how to find our way. Many hold mysterious secrets and myths that have yet to be solved. During this fun and engaging program, explore classical myths through old maps, and play a fun map game.

The 4H Kitchen Science program takes cooking to a whole other level. Make bouncy balls using ordinary items found in your kitchen cabinets. And for a real treat – make homemade ice cream.

To be eligible for the Dean’s List at Southern New Hampshire University a student must compile an academic grade point average of at least 3.7.

• Scarborough – Maureen Hannan, who is studying economics and finance

• South Portland – Kathryn Grimes, who is studying liberal arts, and Tuppence Van de Vaarst, who is studying creative writing and English with a concentration in fiction writing.

Saint Joseph’s College

To be eligible for the Dean’s List at St. Joseph’s College in Standish a student must have attained a GPA of 3.5 or better, earn no less than a B- in all registered courses, and carry a course load of no less than 14 credits.
