BRUNSWICK

This summer the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust will again be offering free weekly outings for children to explore the trails, farms, and waters of the southern midcoast. At 10 a.m. every Wednesday in July and August, families can read stories, sing songs, hike trails, and discover the natural beauty of our community with local educators and naturalists.

Each week Young Explorer outings happen at a different Land Trust or community property. Kids can come to every outing or just one or two. Every child receives a YE “passport,” which includes information and activities for all the destinations, and helps families get out for independent exploration. At meet-ups, topics might include trees, butterflies, pond life, blueberries, tides, watersheds, gardening, farming, map reading or weather. The program is designed to follow the interests of the kids involved, so it’s never certain where the questions might lead, and the fun has ranged from popping bubbles of fir sap to catching salamanders. “Look what I found!” is the favorite phrase. In addition, kids are encouraged to make observations and ask questions, and practice being mentors, good neighbors and stewards of the land.

In 2014, the Land Trust developed the Young Explorers program as a way to connect the youngest members of the community to the special places that the Land Trust works to protect, and to nurture healthy children who value the natural world and strong communities.

According to the land trust, research confirms that children who have a relationship with nature and community at an early age are more likely to be good stewards of the environment and civic leaders as adults. Supported by funding from the Senter Foundation, this year YE has grown to include a farm tour, garden plot at the Tom Settlemire Community Garden, and increased field resources such as nets and field guides.

All outings are free and open to everyone. For more information about the program including the weekly outing locations or to RSVP for an outing visit www.btlt.org/young-explorers or call the Land Trust office at (207) 729-7694.

The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust was formed in 1985 around the preservation of a small coastal meadow and since has preserved some 2,300 acres of precious natural areas. The Land Trust is in the final phase of a $7 million capital campaign to further its goals in land conservation and stewardship.
