State Rep. Mark Bryant, D-Windham, will serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Legislative Effectiveness Committee and as an alternate on the Council of State Governments/Eastern Regional Conference’s Transportation Committee.

The Legislative Effectiveness Committee addresses a range of topics including ethics, legislator and staff training, lobbying, constituent outreach and service, technology, social media and effective legislative practices. It also examines legislative spending decisions, caucuses and evaluation practices.

“This is a great opportunity to learn about new ways to strengthen the legislative process in Maine and ensure that we are keeping pace with other states,” said Bryant. “I look forward to exchanging ideas with other lawmakers about how to make our state government as fair, efficient and effective as possible.”

The National Conference of State Legislatures serves the interests of state legislatures by providing states support, ideas and connections for policy and effectiveness. The conference’s standing committees educate Congress and federal agencies about state concerns and serve as a forum for state legislators and legislative staff to learn about and share information regarding programs and initiatives in other states.

The Council of State Governments/Eastern Regional Conference facilitates the exchange of ideas and information among state and provincial policymakers, business leaders and the academic community in the northeastern states.

Among other responsibilities, the council’s Transportation Committee is working with the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials to ensure that the region’s unique set of needs and characteristics are respected in the allocation of federal funds.

“Improving our transportation infrastructure is critical to economic growth, and it is a top priority for Maine,” said Bryant. “This will be a great forum to discuss our transportation goals and work alongside other northeastern states to prioritize and achieve them.”
