WATERVILLE — The man believed to be the target of an attack on May Street early Tuesday morning has been released from the hospital and is cooperating with investigators, according to Waterville Police Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.
There have been no arrests in the case but considering the severity of the man’s injuries, charges would likely include aggravated assault, a felony, Rumsey said Wednesday.
The 27-year-old, who police have not identified, suffered a broken nose and fractured eye socket and had stitches on his lip and above his eye, Rumsey said. He has since been released from the hospital and is cooperating with investigators in recounting Tuesday’s events, Rumsey said.
Police were called to the apartment at 4 May St. shortly before 4 a.m. on Tuesday for a report of a brawl involving between 20 and 30 people. According to investigators, the man was found unconscious and was taken to MaineGeneral’s Thayer Center for Health.
Many of the people involved in the fight fled on foot when police arrived. Others cooperated to varying levels when police detailed and questioned them, Rumsey said.
Police have said they believe the fight may started when the injured man was confronted by two or three other men, then escalated into a general melee.
According to neighbors, the apartment where the brawl occurred is the scene of regular rowdy and disruptive drinking parties that can last into the morning. Waterville police have been called to the address numerous times for fights and loud noise complaints, and made a drug raid on the apartment in February.
Police asked that anyone with information on the case to contact Officer Ryan Dinsmore at 680-4700.
