The combined efforts of the Freeport Falcons’ offense – seven goals all told, including an Emily Johnson hat trick – couldn’t keep Freeport on pace with the Yarmouth Clippers’ in last Wednesday’s Class B East regional final.

Yarmouth’s Shannon Fallon banged out eight to lead the Clippers’ offense, an overwhelming assault that ultimately downed the Falcons 15-7.

The Clippers went on to face Kennebunk in the Class B final on Saturday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, where they repeated as state champs, edging the Rams 11-10 in OT.

No. 4 Freeport at No. 2 Yarmouth

The Clippers charged onto the field and took immediate control on Wednesday, building to an enormous, 12-2 lead at the break. In the second half, though, Freeport held advantage, outscoring Yarmouth 5-3 – an impressive feat, of course, but not nearly enough to stage any sort of comeback. 15-7 the final.

“Our second half was much better,” said Freeport head coach Marcia Wood, “but unfortunately we were too far in a hole to dig our way out. I wanted to do better against them than we did when we first played them – and we did. It’s obviously not the outcome we wanted, but you have to be happy for the little things and accomplishments.

“Yarmouth did a great job pressuring us and causing us to turn the ball over,” Wood said. “I felt we had a slight edge in draw controls, but just couldn’t finish. Lizzy Martin once again dominated the draw with five, and Chloe Davison had five.”

Freeport’s Emily Johnson grabbed a hat trick in the contest. Fellow Falcon Chloe Davidson added two goals and an assist. Lizzy Martin and Lily Johnston had one goal apiece, and Courtney Broderick assisted once.

In addition to her eight goals, Fallon posted a pair of assists. Teammate Lane Simsarian had four goals and one assist. Lily Watson and two goals and two assists, and Emma Torres had one goal.

Freeport returned to the sidelines till 2016 at 8-7. Yarmouth, meanwhile, extended their season for three more days – into Saturday’s State Championship vs. West reps Kennebunk. The Clippers emerged on top there, too, 11-10 to earn their second Class B crown in as many years. They retire for the year at 12-4.

“Looking ahead, we’ll definitely miss our seniors – Lizzy Martin, Lily Kolle, Julia Dearden, Jasmine Olins and Emily Johnson – and all that they have done for us,” said Wood. “But we were a young team this year, full of freshmen and sophomores. It’s exciting to look toward our future after the experience they gained this year.”
