The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Casco Rescue responded Thursday morning to a single vehicle crash on Route 302 in Casco involving serious bodily injury to young children and their mother.

Upon arrival sheriff’s deputies and Casco Fire and EMS found a single vehicle that had struck a utility pole and had then rolled over. According to Capt. Don Goulet, the impact with the pole caused the high tension power lines to become dislodged from the pole. The high tension lines ignited a small fire that was extinguished by a passerby. Other civilians who came upon the crash rendered initial aid and extrication to the victims of the crash.

Initial investigation revealed that a 2012 Jeep Compass being operated by Ashley McMullan, 26, of Naples, westbound on Route 302 left the roadway and struck the utility pole and then rolled over coming to rest on its side.

The passengers in the vehicle included McMullan’s children, a 3-year-old female and a 7-year-old male. McMullan and the 7-year-old were transported to Maine Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries while the 3-year-old was treated on scene by Casco EMS and was taken by Life Flight to Maine Medical Center with serious head trauma. Both children were in car seats.

The crash remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.
