Here at Second Congregational in Biddeford we do our best to allow programs that are needed in the community to use our space for a small fee, because we feel that is what the church is here for. The church is located in the downtown area where there is easy access for those who need services. There are four different 12-step programs and the free meal program, Bon Appetit, that currently use the building. However, this is an old historic building that needs the attention and respect that comes with being a sacred space. We need the help of all who use this building and the community around us to build a plan of how to best care for this place.
Starting in June, on the third Saturday of the month, we will hold meetings to discuss the future of this building and the ability of groups to use it. The congregation will begin the workshop in the late morning and talk about how we can grow our congregation in worship and service to God. At noon, we will break for lunch and welcome in those who are representatives of the groups who use our building and any interested members of the community. This will be a potluck so we encourage those interested to bring something to share. We will then continue our discussion and talk about the future of our building and our connection to the community.
We welcome any who are interested in current or future use of this building and preserving its historic presence to join us in discussion at these workshops from noon to 2 p.m. The first workshop will be Saturday, June 20 and will continue the third Saturday of each month through the summer. They will be held in the Ladies Parlor of the church at 19 Crescent St., Biddeford.
This building is here for all of us, to be used in doing the work that is important to our community. Let us remember that it is also a building that is dedicated to God, an old historic place that needs our respect and loving care.
