As part of its alternative gallery program, Thos. Moser’s flagship showroom in Freeport will host “The Best of Maine Contemporary Art,” which includes paintings by locally and nationally recognized artists. The exhibition, which opens June 17 and runs through October 12, is in collaboration with local art dealer Kevin Tierney of Maine Art Collectors (MAC).
This year’s collection boasts an impressive presentation of museum-quality pieces, ranging from quintessential and abstract Maine landscapes, photo realism paintings of aerial views of Boston and abstract expressionism mixed media compositions. Many paintings were exhibited at the Portland Museum of Art, Bates College Museum of Art and the University of New England Museum of Art. Price points range from $ 3,000 to $ 130,000 with the entire exhibit priced at more than $2 million.
“In the past 10 years, the quality and diversity of exhibiting artists has increased,” said Laurie Perzley, art curator of the Thos. Moser Freeport Showroom.
Since the flagship showroom opened in 1998, it has regularly exhibited art, becoming a recognized and leading venue for art exhibitions in Maine.
“ This year’s caliber of artists and range of artwork are truly spectacular, our first exhibit of such stature,” Perzley added.
Among the artists exhibiting are Joel Babb of Sumner, Eric Hopkins of North Haven, Thomas Crotty of Freeport, Connie Hayes of Rockland and William Manning of Falmouth. Work by Philip Barter, Tom Curry, Lois Dodd, Lynne Drexler, Stephen Etnier, James Fitzgerald, Jill Hoy, Bernard Langlais, Scott Moore, Marguerite Robichaux, Judy Taylor, Neil Welliver, and Michael Zigmond will also be on display.
“In an effort to provide varied price points for our customers, maintain the gallery’s status for exhibiting significant works of art and provide opportunities for emerging artists, we open our showroom each year to promote a full spectrum of artistic achievements,” said Tom Moser, founder and owner of Thos. Moser.
The opening reception for “ The Best of Maine Contemporary Art” is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the Thos. Moser Showroom located at 149 Main St., Freeport. Regular showroom hours are 10 a. m. to 6 p. m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call the Freeport Showroom at 865- 4519.
