Studio 48 Performing Arts & Dance Center’s new musical theater workshop for teens will perform “13, a new musical,” at 7 p.m. tonight and at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at the Orion Performing Arts Center at Topsham Middle School. “13, a new musical” is a Broadway rock musical from Tony award winning composer Jason Robert Brown. Full of humor, energy and wit — in addition to smart, magnetic and upbeat music — “13, a new musical” is sure to speak to current, former and soon-to-be teens.
“13” tells the story of young Evan Goldman, who is forced by his parents divorce to move from New York City to Indiana just before his Bar Mitzvah. He faces a dilemma — if he can’t get the cool kids at his new school to come to his party, he’ll be stuck at the loser table for the rest of his life.
In a middle school in Appleton, Indiana thirteen-yearolds leap from childhood into a whole new fantastic and frightening era: Their teens. Like kids everywhere, they suddenly are trying to survive classes, navigate cliques and fit in with the right crowd. In one hundred song-filled minutes, “13” is a provoking, engaging story, told with contagious energy and humor with all-teen performers.
For tonight’s performance, Studio 48 is proud to announce they have partnered with the Logan Sweet Foundation to raise awareness on a silent deadly virus called Myocarditis. Logan Sweet was a Bowdoin resident and passed away from this disease when he was only seven years old. Logan would have been 13 years old this year. The Logan Sweet Foundation will have an auction in the lobby tonight to raise money. All proceeds benefit the Logan Sweet Foundation. Local businesses have donated gift certificates, items and services for the community to bid on. The winners will be announced at the end of intermission.
“13, a new musical” is produced and musically directed by Rebecca Beck, founder of Studio 48. The musical is directed by Kay Warren of Brunswick and choreographed by Jake Boyce of Dean College. Stage managers are students of Harpswell Coastal Academy, Amanda Palma and Rose Davis. The costumer for the production is Jenny Brown of Topsham and pit accompanist is Rebecca Caron from Lewiston. On drums is Mike Haskell from Bowdoin, on guitars are Joe Arsenault from Dresden and Patrick Sylvia from Biddeford, on bass is Jimmy Mcgirr of Portland. Devin Cromwell is sound engineer and Derrick Lagasse is lighting designer.
The cast includes many youth who are actively involved in our local arts community. The role of Evan is played by Brian Pelletier of West Bath; Patrice is played by Riley Robertson of Bowdoin and Sophia Wood of Auburn; Lucy is played by Brunswick resident Hannah Perreault; Kendra is played by Madeleine Blakemore of Bath and Emma Rankins of Durham; Molly is played by Kelly Guinti of Brunswick; Archie is played by Topsham resident Jackie Ellsworth; Cassie is played by Jackie Brochu of Topsham; Charlotte is played by Harpswell resident Samantha Palma; Brett is played by Avery Jean of Auburn; Eddie is played by Topsham resident Luke Curnin and Malcolm is played by Brunswick resident Jack Coray.
