CAPE ELIZABETH — Duane C. Ryder, 73, died June 1 at his Cape Elizabeth home, after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 5, 1941, in Portland, the son of Cleveland L. and Isabel E. Ryder. Duane attended Cape Elizabeth schools and graduated from high school in 1961.
In his early years, he worked at Day’s Jewelry Store, but he went on to start his own excavation business.
Ryder was proud of his Masonic membership at Corner Stone Lodge, in Portland. He also belonged to the Cape Elizabeth Grange.
He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Ryder, of South Portland, and Steven Ryder, of Winthrop, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his brothers, Dana Ryder and his wife, Nancy, of Buxton, Clayburn Ryder and his wife, Luanne, of Westbrook, and Ernest Ryder and his wife, Joanne, of Bradenton, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held June 6 at Little Falls Baptist Church, in Gorham.
