Westbrook police officers stopped a potential suicide from taking place Monday, taking the subject into protective custody.
According to a press release by Westbrook police Capt. Sean Lally, officers responding to a 30-year-old suicidal male armed with a knife at 213 Brown St. Monday, contained and negotiated with the man after he demanded officers shoot him, “while repeatedly cutting himself in the neck and arms.
“At one point the male advanced on an officer in an overt attempt to get shot,” the release said, adding that officers used Tasers to halt his advance and take him into protective custody.
Police said the male was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
“Throughout the encounter, the officers showed an enormous amount of restraint and professionalism. It should also be noted that all four officers involved have received Crisis Intervention training for Law Enforcement Officers through NAMI Maine (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and that training was helpful in resolving this situation,” the release said.
