Finally, we can look out the windows and not see snow! In fact, I think one of my friends is right when she said one day we were looking at snow drifts and a couple days later it was 85 degrees – no spring to speak of this year. The “seasons” in Maine over the last five years or so have certainly been unique.

Lots of parades and community activities will now be the norm until it’s time for country fair season. Check out your local bulletin boards for events that may not make it into the newspaper or on the evening news. Do get outside and remember to look for a shaded spot, watch out for ticks, use sun screen and enjoy the fresh air.

At the Lakes Region Senior Center, housed at the Little Falls Activity Center, 40 Acorn St., in Gorham, a special Father’s Day lunch is planned at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8. Everyone is invited and you can bring a friend. The lunch is grilled frankfurters, hamburgers, potato salad, cole slaw, desserts and beverages. June birthdays will be celebrated. Donation is $5.

On Monday, June 29, at 10 a.m., Drema Shaw, a member of Gorham Health Council and a retired physical therapist, will speak at the Lakes Region Senior Center. This is a free presentation, open to everyone. Refreshments will be served.

AARP Smart Driver Course will be presented from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Windham Public Library, 217 Windham Center Road, on Saturday, June 20. Advance registration no later than June 15 is requested as class size is limited. To register, phone John Hammon, volunteer instructor, at 655-4943. The registration fee is $15 for AARP members, $20 for others.

This four-hour refresher course is for experienced drivers 50 years of age and older. Topics include safe driving strategies, defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road. The class helps drivers adjust to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Drivers in Maine 55 years of age and older are entitled to discounts on their insurance premiums for three years after taking or re-taking this course. On Sunday, June 7, Raymond Village Community Church will explore “Living Longer, Caring for the Aging: Exploring Aging Issues through Contemporary Films,” from 4-6:30 p.m.

The church invites everyone interested in the issues of aging to come to a screening of segments of aging-related films, including the critically acclaimed “Still Mine,” starring Genevieve Bujold and James Cromwell.
