“KIMONO 1” BY CAROL WILEY

NEW HARBOR

Find your way to the Saltwater Artists cooperative gallery located at 3056 Bristol Road in New Harbor just a half mile from the entrance to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Park to view a new and exciting offering of Maine contemporary art — on view at the gallery through June 20.

Works on view by Carol Wiley of Jefferson show exploration of color and shape. The “Kimono Series” reflects this direction in a series of 12 collages recycled from Carol’s watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings. Each “Kimono” piece shows off strong use of color and design.

Another returning artist, Judine French of Cumberland Foreside, whose latest work shows Maine’s seacoast in watercolors, approaches each work using a contemporary palette to express the beauty French sees around her.

“Nature, through my eyes, is very colorful and joyous,” French said. “And as I paint each piece, I work to capture its essence through my art.” French’s work has been shown in numerous local and state juried exhibitions and should continue to delight visitors to the gallery.

Joining Saltwater this season is Mary Kay Spencer of Litchfield, a potter who brings a contemporary approach as the work evolves over her 30-year career as a working potter. An owner and artisan of The Potter’s House in Litchfield with her husband, Jeff, she crafts fine, colorfully hand painted stoneware pieces that please the eye and feel good in the hand.

Spencer’s current work uses bold colors and oxides, incorporating digital photographs and decal work into traditional pottery, mixing classic organic shapes with modern lines and rich details through an inventive manipulation of images and patterns.

Kay Miller of South Bristol continues to explore her career as a contemporary print maker and has enjoyed a great response showing her work at Saltwater. Both Miller and Frances Hodsdon formed the Midcoast Printmakers, Inc. in Damariscotta and Miller’s skill and willingness to explore this exciting medium has produced monotypes, collographs and etchings which reflect a love of nature combined with using actual botanical grasses and ferns in the lithographs. Kay’s work can be found in several Maine venues while continuing to offer classes at the Midcoast Printers.

These featured artists can be seen at the gallery and online at saltwaterartists.com along with twenty-two award-winning Maine artists showing new work for the 2015 season.

Saltwater Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends of May 30-31, June 6-7 and June 13-14 and starting on Saturday, June 20, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the remainder of the season.
