KENNEBUNKPORT — James L. (Jim) Sandler, 69, of Kennebunkport, passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, 2015.

He was born in Portland on May 20, 1946 to Irving and Loretta Sandler. He was a graduate of Biddeford High School and Thomas College.

Jim was the proud co-owner of Sandler Bros., one of the oldest family-owned companies in the region, before he sold it in 2006. Since retiring, Jim has been a full-time dad, grandfather, friend, and mentor, supporting his kids in everything that they do ”“ traveling the country (and world) to see them.

When Jim wasn’t attending one of his kids’ athletic events, “The Senator” and former Maine state foul shooting champion (1964) could be seen demonstrating his own athletic prowess at Saco Sport and Fitness or walking Kennebunk Beach.

Jim is survived by: his loving twin sister, Elaine Sandler of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; uncle, Alvin Jolovitz of Portland; his six children, daughter in-law, and granddaughter, who think the world of him, and include Erica Sandler of Washington D.C., Ilyse, Austin, and Carly Sandler of Kennebunk, Michael, Ilona, and Natalie Sandler of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Tyler Sandler of Portland.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Maine Cancer Foundation (mainecancer.org) or to a charity of one’s choice.

A non-denominational open service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Temple Beth El Thursday, May 28, followed by a private burial.

A Shiva (i.e. a remembrance to honor Jim), open to all, will be held at his home at 17A Grove Street, Kennebunkport, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
