Portland police confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Treyjon Arsenault, 19, died following a shooting late on Memorial Day in Portland’s Old Port area. Arsenault was a 2014 graduate of Westbrook High School and captain of the varsity football team.
Police said in a report that Arsenault, who lived in Scarborough, died early Tuesday morning in Maine Medical Center. Mark Belserene, administrator for the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta, said Tuesday afternoon that the autopsy has been completed.
Belserene said cause of death was from a gunshot and Arsenault’s death has been ruled a homicide.
Police said a 20-year-old Portland man is a second victim, who remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon but is “expected to make a full recovery.” Police did not release the identity of the second victim.
Police responded at 11:56 p.m. on Monday to 371 Fore St., Da Block Studios, for the report of gunshots. Officers discovered that the two had sustained gunshot wounds and both victims were immediately transported to a local hospital.
Unknown suspects were last seen fleeing up Market Street toward Milk Street, according to police. There are no descriptions. Detectives and officers are interviewing witnesses and the investigation is ongoing.
Initial investigation suggests there may have been more than one attacker, police said. No motive for the shooting has been established.
News of the shooting stunned Westbrook. The school’s yearbook said Arsenault was captain of the varsity football team. According to www.hudl.com, Arsenault was 5 feet 7 inches, weighed 175 pounds and could bench press 225 pounds.
Arsenault was known for his athletic ability and, in earlier years, Arsenault had played Little League baseball. Rick Knight, a Westbrook Little League coach, easily recalled that Arsenault had played for the Phoenix Welding Little League team in Westbrook.
“A very good player,” Knight said, and called the shooting incident “very tragic.”
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting incident or has information to Portland Police detectives at 874-8533 or 874-8575.
