A Wells man who police allege was transporting drugs from Massachusetts for sale in Maine was arrested Thursday night by state troopers and Kittery police.

Cole Dalton, 29, was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said Kittery police and a Maine Drug Enforcement Agency task force in York County had been investigating heroin distribution in Kittery. They allege that Dalton was going to Massachusetts to buy the drug, repackaging it in Maine and then selling it in and around Kittery.

When they learned that Dalton was making another trip to Massachusetts this week, McCausland said, police kept an eye on Interstate 95 and Route 236 and arrested Dalton on Route 236 around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A search by a drug-detecting dog from the Saco Police Department led officers to seize about 18 grams of heroin, valued at about $3,000, McCausland said.

A search of Dalton’s apartment in Wells turned up more heroin, packaging materials and digital scales, he said.

Dalton was taken to the York County Jail and held on $30,000 bail. McCausland said the investigation into drug trafficking is continuing and more arrests are expected.
