SOUTH PORTLAND — Lovable and talented 1960s teenager Tracy Turnblad has only one desire: to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.”
When that dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network — all without mussing her ‘do!
Not only is “Hairspray” a clever social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s, it is also a joyous tribute to an era past, and an intelligent, warm and joyous musical comedy you’ll not soon forget.
With toe-tapping music, as well as some of your favorite community players, and some new faces, too, this musical — directed by Michael Donovan with David Delano as musical director — will have you rooting for Tracy and dancing in the aisles.
“ Hairspray” opens tonight and runs through June 7. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $ 20 for adults, $ 18 for seniors and $15 for children and students with ID.
