Saco Citizens for Sensible Government (SCSG) supports the proposed 50 cent increase in the mill rate for Saco schools for 2015-16, and recommends that the public vote yes to accept the school budget on June 9. For a $200,000 home the tax increase for the schools amounts to $100.

Almost all of the increase involves Thornton Academy and is mandated by state law that sets the tuition rate for school districts associated with private high schools. This new rate, set in December, affected the balance of this school year from January through June as well as the new school year. There is no local control of the fees involved. Even with additional cost, Saco expenses associated with Thornton Academy remain low compared to communities managing their own high schools. Then too, there is the outstanding reputation for quality education from which Saco citizens benefit. There are plans for closer collaboration between Thornton Academy and our school district to better prepare students for high school.

We believe it is the responsible course to accept the proposed budget that essentially holds the line on expenses while paying the mandatory new costs associated with Thornton Academy. In the view of SCSG, public support for the new budget is essential to maintain continuity. Since the breakaway from RSU 23, a lot has been accomplished to stabilize the schools and establish a track record. Beginning in July a new superintendent, Dominic DePatsy, with a strong background of management in a similar school system will follow the good work of the retiring Mike Pulsifer. Work is proceeding to prepare for replacing Young School while improving other schools.

Our Saco School System is our “jewel in the crown.” Thornton Academy is an integral part of this community asset and in many instances is the reason that families and businesses relocate to our City. Education for our children has to be a priority. We spend less per student and a smaller percentage of our total budget on education than do many other Maine municipalities. We have aging schools that need to be addressed.

Your affirmative vote on June 9 is essential!
