Athletes from Freeport, Kennebunk, Waynflete and Wells traveled to Cape Elizabeth on Friday for a five-way meet, with Kennebunk finishing first among the boys and Wells among the girls.
At this point in the season, wins at meets perhaps matter less to teams than individual performances. Coaches and their runners, throwers and jumpers are looking, at present, primarily to improve PRs and qualify as many participants for next month’s States as possible.
Cape head coach Doug Worthley provided some insights into how a team assesses itself.
“We’ve got a couple of really good senior leaders, and they’re teaching the younger kids how it works,” he said. “And we have a good group of freshmen, sophomores, who are learning everything now, and have a lot of potential.”
Who are Worthley’s leaders?
“Eddie Galvin in the jumps and sprints,” he said. “Kyle Kennedy is here every day, even though he can’t compete; he’s making sure everybody’s doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Alex Depke is only a sophomore, but he’s just a natural leader. All of my girls; Emily Faria, Eva Brydson.”
“I hate to say it’s a building year,” Worthley said, “because it’s such a cliche?, but we lost – you know, Mitch Morris and Kyle Kennedy are out for the season, Harry Queeney might be out for the season, and those are all States point scorers.” Morris, Kennedy and Queeney are all dealing with injuries.
“Our throws are coming along,” Worthley said. “Greg [Marles, throwing coach] has really trained a great group of throwers, and we have good senior leaders and a whole bunch of younger kids that really want to throw. And Andrew [Lupien, running coach] always does a good job with all the distance runners. So I guess I’ve got to pull my weight a little bit.”
