SOUTH BERWICK — Richard S. Wade, 87, of 46 York Woods Road, died on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at The Wentworth Douglas Hospital.

He was born in Johnson City, New York, on May 14, 1927, a son of Roy and Blanche Wade.

Richard graduated from Gardiner High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy Air Corps when he was 17. He was a radio-gunman in the Night Torpedo Squadron and discharged when he was 19. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy on July 2, 1954.

Richard graduated from the University of Maine in 1951 with a B.S. in civil engineering and received a master’s degree in engineering from Union College. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as Head of the Naval Architect and Structural Division in PERA (SS) that did the overhaul and planning for the entire fleet of submarines. After 30 years, he retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and later worked at Bath Iron Works for ten years as a System Analyst/Programmer in the Hull Engineering Department retiring in 1994.

He married Betty Gulowsen on Sept. 15, 1951, at the Highland Avenue Methodist Church in Gardiner,

Maine. They were married for 63 years. Richard was a dedicated and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. He and his wife Betty enjoyed fishing, swimming, and boating with their children and grandchildren during the summer months, and going to the Fryeburg Fair. They also enjoyed living in Bradenton, Florida, during the winter.

He is survived by his loving wife Betty; a son, David B. Wade and his wife Joan of South Berwick; two daughters, Donna L. Deutsch of North Plainfield, New Jersey, and Nancy E. Clark and her husband Donald L. Clark of South Berwick; six grandchildren, Benjamin and Casey Wade, Samuel and Jennifer Deutsch, and Joshua and Abner Clark; three greatgrandchildren, Dylan, Noah and Riley Clark; a sister, Shirley Seymour of Georgia; one nephew John Seymour Jr. of Georgia and one niece Debbie Gentis of Norman, Oklahoma.

An hour of calling will be held on Sunday, May 17 at McIntire McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick from 11:30 to 12:30. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 at the funeral home.
