Born in Bath, Maine, on June 24, 1935, Marion was the daughter of Cleveland and Bertha (Morse) Holbrook. She spent her childhood years in Winnegance, Maine, an area that always held a special place in her heart. Marion was a proud graduate of Morse High School, class of ’53, and enjoyed class reunions and alumni gatherings.
An interesting fact about Marion, and one she was very proud of, she was a direct descendant of Daniel Morse — the first Morse settler on what was to be named Morse’s Mountain over 270 years ago.
For many years Marion worked at Bath Iron Works as an administrative secretary. Following her retirement she became the owner of a successful bed & breakfast in Small Point and went on to work at Phippsburg Town Hall. She truly loved her involvement with the Planning Board and working with such a wonderful staff.
She spent endless hours in her garden growing and cultivating an amazing array of plants. Her knowledge knew no end and she was generous with her time and suggestions for those who sought her advice. Marion was incredibly proud to live in the Bath/Phippsburg area her entire life and could be found many summer nights enjoying some of the great seafood at Spinney’s or Water’s Edge where everyone seemed to know her. Nothing made her happier than holidays and family gatherings at her home with her children and their spouses, grandchildren, and lifelong friends. Her love, generosity, wonderful homecooked meals, laughter, and fun will truly be missed by all.
Other real loves included Bath’s Fourth of July celebrations, the Bath Municipal Band, listening to music, dancing, playing the piano, and spending time at Popham Beach. All of the items she has made by hand over the years (knitted, crocheted, needle point, or sewn) will forever be cherished by her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard A. Quimby II of Phippsburg and John M. Quimby of Brunswick; her two daughters, Nancy J. (Quimby) Ferro and her husband Robert of Westbrook, and Laura A. (Gallant) Mynahan and her husband Patrick of Alfred. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Callie Dutton of Portland, Olivia and Katherine Mynahan of Alfred, and Lucas Quimby of Brunswick, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Doran F. Hebert, and three sisters, and two brothers.
Marion’s family wishes to thank the staff at Foreside Harbor, and the nurses and doctors at Maine Medical Center for their amazing care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Phippsburg’s Fire and Rescue or Police Departments (please contact Phippsburg Town Hall, 207- 389-2653).
Visiting hours will be held at Desmond Funeral Home in Bath on Saturday, May 16, 9 to 11 a.m. with a service immediately following. Upon the conclusion, there will be a procession to Morningside Cemetery in Phippsburg.
