Bulky waste collection May 16
Durham’s spring bulky waste collection day is Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at 1099 Royalsborough Road (the former Copp Excavation site). There will be no charge to dispose of these items: appliances, furniture, mattresses and box springs, bicycles, large metal items/scrap metal, refrigerators and air conditioners (must be red tagged to show Freon has been removed), rolled carpets, storm doors, outdoor furniture, large plastic items, toys, dishes/pots and pans. E-waste that will be accepted at no charge includes TVs, fluorescent bulbs, miscellaneous electronics, PCB/non-PBC ballasts, computer monitors, batteries and mercury devices. Passenger car tires with no rims will have a $4 charge, and pickup tires with no rims will have a $7 charge.
Items that will not be accepted include garbage or household waste, household recyclables, oil-based paints/solvents, dump truck or loader tires, building or demolition debris, car batteries, hazardous or liquid waste, household cleaners/insecticides, gasoline, yard or tree waste, shingles, gas tanks or containers.
Plant sale this weekend
The Eureka plant sale will be held Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Durham Eureka Community Center, junction of routes 136 and 9.
Annuals, perennials, vegetable flats and hanging baskets will be available for sale. The Eureka Cafe? will be open Saturday by the Durham Explorers.
Craft, vendor sale Saturday
Local crafters, vendors, farmers and artists will be selling their wares during the Bulky Waste Day Fair, Saturday, May 16, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., rain or shine, at the First Congregational Church, UCC, 773 Royalsborough Road. There also will be a silent auction, knife and scissor sharpening and coffee and muffins early for those coming to Bulky Waste Day. A lunch of grilled cheese or hot dogs, with homemade apple pie, will be available. Music will be provided by Jeff and Valerie Chipman and Larissa Smith. Historic commission seeks associate members

Paving under way
Crews have begun paving Route 125 at the Freeport-Durham town line. Paving will extend 2.78 miles to the Soper Road intersection. The paving operation will take place Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Motorists should expect slight delays when traveling through the work zone that will be controlled by flaggers.
It is anticipated all work will be completed by the first week of June. Glidden Excavating and Paving Inc. of Gorham is performing the $659,000 project.
Register for parade on Memorial Day
The fourth annual Durham Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 25, starting at 10 a.m. at Davis Road and traveling down Route 125 to the Durham Community School, with stops at the Veteran’s Memorial Park and Sawyer Cemetery. Registration forms can be downloaded from the town website at www.durhamme.com.
Forms can be turned in ahead of time or at parade registration.
AMVETS 5K race and run
The AMVETS 5K Race and Fun Run will be held on Monday, May 25, starting at 8 a.m. at the AMVETS hall. Registration forms can be downloaded from the town website at www.durhamme.com. All registration fees go to the AMVETS and can be paid online.
Scholarship quilt raffle tickets still available
Quilt raffle tickets, with proceeds going to the Denise LaFlamme Scholarship, are available until May 17. On May 24, Philip and Amanda LaFlamme will draw the winning ticket for the Denise LaFlamme Scholarship Fund Quilt Raffle.
“It is easy to buy the quilt raffle tickets,” said Jean Lane, one of the seamstresses/scholarship organizers. “Go to www.durhammoms.com to purchase them online. Or contact any of the organizers. You can also go to our Facebook page (Durham Mom’s Scholarship), post a message, and we will get in contact with you.”
According to Sarah Cass, the group has raised over $1,000 so far, “and every cent from the raffle ticket sales will go toward the scholarship. A hard-working, community-focused student from Durham, Pownal or Freeport will be the recipient of the first annual Denise LaFlamme Scholarship, and will be able to continue their education thanks to the generosity of hundreds of quilt raffle ticket purchasers.”
The scholarship recipient will be announced at the Freeport High School Senior Class Candelight Ceremony on June 12. Applications for the scholarship can be obtained at the high school guidance office. All of the following scholarship organizers will be selling tickets for the quilt raffle until May 17: Tracey Jordan, Julie Wagoner, Louann McCarthy, Wendy Marsaller, Janice Brissette, Jean Lane, Sarah Cass and Leigh Fisher. Durham Night at the Sea Dogs
On Friday, June 5, join friends and neighbors at Hadlock Field for a night of fun as the Portland Sea Dogs take on the Bowie Baysox. The game starts at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game are $5, with part of the proceeds going to support Durham Youth Baseball. Members needed for new town committee
Durham selectmen have approved a new committee in response to warrant article 35 on the warrant approved at the town meeting on April 4. Nine residents are being sought for s for the Alternative Warrant Exploration Committee. Applications are due by May 5, and members will be appointed at that evening’s board meeting.
Applications are available at the town office, online or call 353-2561. Details for the committee will be discussed at the next selectmen’s meeting on April 21.
Road-Ride-Riddle fundraiser June 6
Road-Ride-Riddle, a fundraiser for the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach Food Pantry, is Saturday, June 6, rain or shine, starting at the Durham Congregational Church,
773 Royalsborough Road, corner of routes 9 and 136. Registration is from 9:30-10:15 a.m. The fee is $10 or 10 non-perishable food items. Kids under 12 are half price.
Participants take a self-guided ride through Durham, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls and Bowdoin, the towns served by the food pantry. Road-Ride-Riddle is to be solved by the following designated route, where the answers to three questions can be found. The ride will end at the food pantry, located at the MTM Center, School Street (next to the United Methodist Church), in Lisbon Falls, where tours of the facility, free refreshments, and a wide range of prizes will be drawn by participants who have completed the three questions and have entered their names for the drawing starting at 11:45 a.m. Participants must be present to have their names drawn. Kindergarten, pre-K registration
Durham Community School kindergarten registration is now available for children who were born before or on Oct. 15, 2015. Online registration can be found at dcs.rsu5.org.
The school is also registering pre-kindergarten students for the 2015-16 school year. The Durham Community School is anticipating a pre-K program designed to prepare students with the basic skills needed to be successful in kindergarten. To be eligible for this program, children must be 4 years old on or before Oct. 15 and reside in Durham. The pre-K program is a partial week, full-day program that follows the RSU 5 school calendar. The program operates in two sessions, a Monday, Wednesday and Friday session, as well as a Tuesday, Thursday session. To find out more about pre-K, see dcs.rsu5.org or call the school at 353-9333.
Cribbage, couponing
The Durham Eureka Community Center, corner of Route 9 and Route 136, hosts cribbage every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.
Couponing for the Community meets at the Community Center two Wednesdays each month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The next meetings are May 13 and May 27.
It is a chance to learn couponing basics including where/how to find and collect coupons; how to organize them; and how to begin using them. Pat Provost heads this project with the hopes that some of the skills acquired will be used to give back to the community by helping families in need. Anyone who already uses coupons or would like to know or learn about ways to coupon is welcome. Those who want more information can call Pat at 212-5156.
Late fee for dog licenses
Dog registration regular fees are $6 for altered dogs and $11 for unaltered dogs. Proof of rabies and first time for neutered or spaying will need to be seen by the registering clerk. This is once-a-year registration. A $25 late fee per dog will now be added to the regular fee. For more information call Town Clerk Shannon Plourde at 353-2561, ext. 11.

Rent Eureka Center

Food pantry
The Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) food pantry, which serves the towns of Durham, Bowdoin, and Lisbon Falls, is open Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday from 8-10 a.m. The LACO Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street, Lisbon Falls. The parking lot is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church, off Berry Avenue. There is also a free clothing bank.
