Regional School Unit 5 directors this week will vote to approve the 2015-2016 budget that goes to voters in the annual town meeting budget vote on May 27.
The school board will start out Wednesday, May 13, with a budget proposal that is 7.2 percent more than approved by voters last year, or about $29.4 million. That’s some $500,000 less than the 9.15 percent increase that RSU 5 administrators requested
The board made the initial round of cuts during a special meeting held on May 6.
“No formal votes were taken, but there was consensus to drop the proposed budget from an increase of 9.15 percent to 7.2 percent,” Nelson Larkins, school board chairman from Freeport, told the Tri-Town Weekly in an email on Monday.
The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Freeport High School.
Following the May 27 town meeting vote, RSU 5 residents will vote on the bottom line budget at the polls in Durham, Freeport and Pownal on June 9.
