All across York County, word is going out on the need for sponsors for those suffering from addiction. Anyone in recovery knows that these are progressive and fatal diseases. Any sober person knows that these diseases, just like cancer, can only be arrested, never fully cured.
The 12-step program for recovery as laid out in the book “Alcoholics Anonymous” has helped our two million people recover. It still remains the best program for recovery on the planet. There are AA and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) programs all throughout York County, the state of Maine and the entire country.
Molly Parks was failed by our society and she was failed by those in recovery. We have enormous numbers of people who understand addiction and can help these young people. The key to success in any sobriety program is to help others in need. Where are the ones who could respond with compassion with the hand of help?
The hand of help was not there for her and those like her, evidenced by the lack of sufficient help and the crying unmet need for sponsors and support people. Those who do help are shouldering the burden unfairly. We must all pitch in.
We don’t need to fight the war overseas, it is right here, in our homes. Let us not continue to fail those who need help so desperately. Let us not be so concerned for our anonymity that we fail to answer this crisis with what we know we have to give ”“ our own experience and hope for healing.
