Disposal, brush pickup
The town will be holding a free disposal week at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center, Monday, April 27-Sunday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The town has also scheduled a residential brush pickup week, April 27-May 1. Brush must be at the curb or shoulder of road by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day. Brush piles must be consolidated. For more details on both initiatives, see www.yarmouth.me.us.
Document shredding offered
The Yarmouth Recycling Committee is letting the public know that there will be a free document shredding service, Saturday, May 16, from 8-11 a.m., rain or shine, at Ameriprise Financial, 45 Forest Falls Drive. Limit is three boxes per customer. For more information, call 846-1175, ext. 208.
S.C. Myer exhibit to open May 5
S.C. Myer will exhibit her 36-by-36 oil on panels, May 5-June 27, at Merrill Memorial Library. Known as Susan Fahlgren, she was a teacher 22 years at North Yarmouth Academy. Using oil and mixed media, she will include pieces from her painting series, “Rocks Pebbles and Stones” and “Schoodic Point.”
Ottow welcomed in D.C.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins last week welcomed Joshua Ottow, assistant principal of Yarmouth High School, to Washington, D.C., after being named Maine’s 2015 Assistant Principal of the Year.
“Strong leadership in our educational system is crucial to the success of our students in Maine and across the country. I am proud to congratulate Yarmouth High School’s Joshau Ottow for his outstanding leadership and hard work on behalf of the students in his school,” said Collins.
The Maine Principal’s Association granted Ottow the award based on “his accomplishments as a collaborative educational leader, as a role model in the development of positive school culture, student-centered policies and programs, and as a tireless advocate for assistant principals.”
Ottow has been the assistant principal since 2011. He is currently working toward his doctoral degree in education at the University of Maine.
Next novel talk Is ‘Family Life’
Merrill Memorial Library’s Readers Circle discusses “Family Life,” by Akhil Sharma, on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The library is located at 215 Main St.
Conservation trust hosts program
The Royal River Conservation Trust will host a program, “New Models for Financing Conservation – Lessons from Around the Globe,” with Bill Ginn, executive vice president for global conservation initiatives for The Nature Conservancy, on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m., at Merrill Memorial Library, 215 Main St., Yarmouth.
Ginn is leading The Nature Conservancy’s work in impact investing, developing markets for natural capital and managing special conservation initiatives.
