Baseball

Coach: Ryan Jones

Last year’s record: 11-6-1

Key players: Sam Warren, Ben Irish, Nick Lorello, Zach Carreiro, Nate Wessel

Key games: Senior Night – May 28 vs. South Portland

Outlook: Despite having lost some big names – e.g., ace pitcher Ben Greenberg – to graduation last year, Jones is optimistic about the coming season. “We return a strong core of experienced players who are self-motivators and driven to succeed. We’ve got great team chemistry and we have fun while getting together. We’re looking forward to seeing what can happen between the start of the season and the end!”

Boys Lacrosse

Coach: Joe Hezlep (eighth year)

Last year’s record: 13-5, lost in A West Semifinal to TA

Key players: Nate Howard (sr., M); Kevin Caldwell (sr., D); Anthony Quintiliani (sr., D); Isaac Ricco (sr., G); Sam Neugebauer (so., A)

Key games: Falmouth, TA, Cape, Cheverus, South Portland

Outlook: The Storm lost a good many seniors to graduation in 2014, so Hezlep is looking to his new crop to bear a weighty mantle of leadership. “We’ll be looking to get better every day and develop into a resilient team.” Scarborough has an exceptionally proud boys lacrosse history under Hezlep’s tutelage; expect them to be a force in the league once again.

Boys Outdoor Track

Coach: Derek Veilleux

Key athletes: Jacob Terry (sr., two mile); Hugh McSorley (sr., shot put & discus); Edward James (sr., pole vault); Jerry Kenney (sr., 200 & 400); Maxim Doiron (sr., 110 hurdles & 300 hurdles); Colin James (sr., 800); Jacob Bloom (sr., 800); Will Fowler (sr., 4×800); Michael Granzier (sr., long jump, triple jump); Lucas Foerester (sr., 4×800); Colin Tardiff (jr., mile); Connor Doherty (jr., two mile); Andrew Sholl (jr., two mile); Griffin Madden (jr., 110 hurdles); Sam Rusak (so., high jump & pole vault)

Key meets: Southwesterns, States

Outlook: “We have a strong returning team this spring, led by the senior class,” says Veilleux. “We have just about every event covered with quality. We’ll be very strong in the distance events, hurdles, relay and pole vault.” Much of the Storm’s indoor-track contingent is also running this spring; the team lost their bid for the indoor track title in mid-February, and thus are charged up for the coming season. “[This group] is in the best shape I’ve seen in my 13 years coaching,” Veilleux says. “Our goal will be to stay healthy and run our best during the championship meets.” Expect Scarborough to be a contender once more.

Coach: Ron Kelly

Key athletes: Mina Puig (sr., pole vault, javelin); Sarah Rinaldi (sr., jumps, relays); Jenna Douglas (sr., 4×800); Kayla Griffis (sr., relays); Laura Volan (jr., distance); Emma Koukos (jr., 4×800); Morgan McKeown (jr., 400); Marisa Carbone (so., 4×800 & throws); Kacey Foerster (so., pole vault); Erin Ryan (so., shot put); Ellen Shaw (so., high jump, hurdles & relays); Lucia Malia (fr., two mile); Caitlin McCaffery (fr., relays); Gabby Panagakos (fr., sprints); Samantha Saraceno (fr., 800); Bethany Sholl (fr., two mile); Natalie Taylor (fr., javelin)

Outlook: The Storm are a young team this year. They’re strongest in the pole vault, javelin, high jump, and distance events. “The development of young athletes will determine our final outcome,” says Kelly.

Softball

Coach: Tom Griffin

Last year’s record: 20-1

Key players: Ashley Gleason (sr.), Brittany Plowman (sr.), Sophia Burnham (sr.)

Key games: TA, Biddeford, South Portland

Outlook: Scarborough softball has been an intimidating outfit in recent years; they should continue that tradition in 2015, though their offense is something of an open question. “We graduated our three, four, five hitters,” says Griffin, “but we feel we have some capable hitters that can step into those lineup spots and produce.” In the field, the team remains solid. “We should be a very good defensive team, and we have several experienced pitchers,” says Griffin.

Boys Tennis

Coach: Craig McDonald

Last year’s record: 12-2, lost in A West Semifinals to Falmouth

Key players: Roy Garland (sr.), Andrew Paradis (jr.)

Key matches: Deering, TA

Outlook: Graduation 2014 took a brutal toll on Storm boys tennis: The team returns just two starters. However, McDonald likes what he sees in his lineup and is confident in their abilities. “The depth and talent of this team should be enough to earn a playoff berth for the 11th consecutive year.”
