Baseball
Coach: Randy Heath
Last year’s record: 4-16
Key players: Nate Smith (jr.), Jordan Williams (jr.)
Key games: Greely, Falmouth
Outlook: “I think Lake Region baseball could surprise some people this season,” says Heath. “The one thing we needed was pitching, and we’ve been working to fix that.” Greely and Falmouth are frequently tops in the league, and Heath looks forward to measuring his squad’s progress against those yardsticks. “Stay the course,” he says, “work hard, continue to build the program, and the wins will come.”
Boys Lacrosse
Coach: Don White
Last year’s record: 2-10
Key players: Ethan Green, Evan Kellough, Nick Hall, Nick LePage, Mason LaPlante, Taylor Davis, Zeke Tocci, Cam Hill
Key games: Bonny Eagle, Wells, York, Camden Hills
Outlook: “We’ve been improving every year since we started lacrosse at Lake Region,” White says. “Last year, we were only a couple goals away from making the playoffs. This year, we’re doing a lot of shuffling, with most of the returning players playing brand new positions, both offensively and defensively. The players are working really hard in practice to make the adjustments and learn their new roles. The effort is fun to watch and I anticipate a very exciting year.”
Girls Lacrosse
Coaches: David Keenan (head), Carrie Bush (asst.)
Key players: Molly Christensen, Olivia Deschenes, Lauren Jakobs, Lindsey Keenan, Lauren Williams
Key games: Wells, Yarmouth
Outlook: This is LRHS’s first year with a varsity girls lacrosse team, meaning they’re about as inexperienced as a team gets. Still, they’re an athletic group, Keenan reports. Most of his players are two- or three-sport athletes. “Our defense looks promising with a good mix of seniors and freshmen,” says Keenan. “We’ll count on the continued growth of players like junior Rachel Bell for the defensive group to reach their full potential.” The Lakers’ midfield and attack are likewise promising units; Aisley Sturk and her fellow freshmen should figure prominently into the former, with Grace Farrington and Madison Simms leading in the latter.
Boys Outdoor Track
Coaches: Mark Snow, Dana Caron
Last year’s record: 1-12
Key athletes: Kyle DeSouza (javelin & shot put); Marcus Devoe (jumps); Dakota Stover (jumps); Theo Snow (hurdles)
Key meets: Tri-County Clash, WMCs
Outlook: “We have a good group of jumpers who’re capable of placing at the league and state championships. Outscoring a team at each meet is a good goal for our team,” says Snow.
Girls Outdoor Track
Coaches: Dana Caron, Mark Snow
Last year’s record: 3-10
Key athletes: Kate Hall (long jump, 100 & 200); Audrey Blais (800 & 1600); Sam DeSouza (throws); Sarah Hancock (discus & shot put); Addie Blais (1600); Danica Chadwick (hurdles)
Key meets: Tri-County Clash, WMCs
Outlook: The Lady Lakers return most of their successful indoor team – including State, New England and National Champion Kate Hall (who every sports fan should go out of their way to see perform before she finishes her high school career in June). Look, then, for the team to strive for the .500 mark and a good showing at WMCs.
Softball
Coach: Wayne Rivet
Last year’s record: 9-7, lost in playoff prelims
Key players: Ashley Clark (sr., P); Allison Morse (sr., C); Abby Scott-Mitchell (sr., 3B); Brittany Perreault (sr., CF)
Key games: Fryeburg, Poland, GNG
Outlook: The Lakers look to remain competitive. “The key this season will be progress of a solid sophomore group and some promising freshmen, who will compete for starting roles,” says Rivet. “Their ability to adjust to varsity pitching, as well as settle in defensively against the league’s top programs will likely decide whether the Lakers can return to the playoffs.” The team isn’t all new, however; the younger players have Clark and Morse to look up to. The duo is all-conference on either side of the plate, and should spearhead a powerful field presence.
Girls Tennis
Coach: Kim Peterson
Key players: Sarah Carlson (sr.), Isabelle Scribner (sr.), Megan VanLoan (sr.), Sam Bolling (sr.), Whitney Harriman (sr.), Jade Facteau (sr.), Liza Wildey (sr.), Madison Wildey (sr.), Spencer True (jr.), Kaytlyn Terry (jr.)
Key matches: Freeport, Kennebunk, Fryeburg
Outlook: The Lady Lakers’ lineup has been somewhat in flux, but Peterson is confident in this much: “We have many seniors I’ll look to for leadership.” She’s also looking to stick to a lineup, once it settles out, allowing players to get comfortable in their roles, developing their singles games or playing with particular doubles partners.
