Baseball

Coach: Brad Smith

Last year’s record: 9-8

Key players: Tyler St. Pierre (sr., P/SS); Evan Harmer (sr., P/C); JT Magno (sr., P/1B); Thomas Wood (sr., CF)

Key games: Yarmouth, Falmouth, Greely, Cape, York, Kennebunk, Freeport

Outlook: “This year’s edition of Patriots baseball returns a solid core of starters from the 2014 campaign,” says Smith, “including the entire outfield, shortstop, first baseman and catcher.” Smith adds that “pitching is the key, year in and year out, and the challenge this season will be how quickly this relatively inexperienced group of hurlers can step up and compete at the varsity level.” Offensively, the team looks to swing an intimidating bat and run an aggressive base. “With hard work and spirited determination, the 2014 Patriots look to return to postseason competition in the Western Maine Conference,” says Smith.

Coach: Todd Mercer

Key athletes: Adam Dumas (sr.), Ben Garcia, (sr.), Ben Garcia (jr.), Zack Haskell (jr.), Ben Rogers (jr.), Andrew Peterson, Jaykob Sanborn, Ethan Ray, Logan Nickerson, Seth Levier, Jeremiah Gendreau, Sam Aube

Key meets: WMCs, States

Outlook: “We feel we have a really strong team this season,” says Mercer. “We have decent numbers to compete with during the regular season and we have a great bunch of highly competitive athletes we expect will carry the team in the Western Maine Conference Meet as well as the State Meet.” Mercer hopes to field three strong relay teams, and especially highlights his 4×400 unit. “They came in second at States last year; MDI ran a great race and beat us straight-up, but that’s only motivated the team to work harder this season. We have three out of four of those athletes back this season, and they’re hungry for victory.”

Last year’s record: 10-8

Key players: Maria Valente (sr., SS); Haley True (so., P/1B); Alie Martell (fr., P/SS)

Key games: Yarmouth, Cape, Greely

Outlook: The Lady Patriots return a core group from last season, but their underclassmen will nevertheless have to step into new roles and shoulder additional responsibilities. “Not only will the underclassmen need to jive with the returning players, they’ll need to come to the squad eager and ready to battle.” Harmon’s returners “have had a taste of the postseason, and have the ambition to get back there again this year…Strong focus, determination and commitment will be key for this season’s success.”
