Perform for a Cure

CenterStage Project Dancers performed at the 10th Annual Perform for a Cure on Saturday, April 4. The mini and youth jazz teams were among 33 numbers that consisted of dance, musical theater, vocal, karate and bands. The additional numbers were performed by studios throughout southern Maine.

Perform for a Cure originated when Rachel Friedman was 10 years old and wanted to give back to those that helped saved her mother, Hannah, from cancer. The fundraiser has raised more than $60,000 the past 10 years. This year’s monies will be donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Book Donations

The libraries at Jordan-Small Middle School and Raymond Elementary School will be hosting book donation boxes for the Teen Trendsetters program. The Teen Trendsetters program is an organization sponsored by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. It works to pair high school mentors with struggling elementary readers to improve literacy for all of our students.

Allie Pandora, a junior at Windham High School and former student at Raymond schools has been involved with the Teen Trendsetters for a couple of years and is spearheading this community service project.

Any picture, middle school or young adult books would be accepted. For more information, contact Lisa Schadler at 655-4743, ext. 2621.

Our local schools benefit greatly from the Box Top program. The students at the Raymond schools are having a contest to see which class can collect the most box tops. Don’t throw your boxes away without seeing if there is a box top to be clipped! Box tops can be given to a student in a baggie or dropped at the schools. Any student bringing in box tops please include your name and your teacher’s name on the baggie.

Third Annual Science Event

Wildlife Encounters will display and discuss some of their animals on Monday, April 20, at the Raymond Public Safety Building beginning at 10:30 a.m. Wildlife Encounters is a family-owned business that teaches about animal habitats, safety and how people can save species from being endangered or extinct. They will feature a wide variety of non-releasable wildlife. Some will be interactive so the children will have a chance to touch and get close to certain animals. This is a community event for all ages. Be sure to mark the time and place on your calendars. This special event is sponsored by the Raymond PTO and Engineered Construction Services.

Basket Weaving

Looking for something new to do? Here is a fun possibility. On Sunday, April 26, from 1-4 p.m. Ida Atkinson will be teaching a basket-weaving course at the library. This is just in time for a May Basket or Mother’s Day. The colorful space-dyed reed sets the tone for your pocket basket. Weave this up with 1?4-inch flat reed in continuous method to form a subtle lightning bolt on the front side of the basket. It is finished with a seagrass handle and double lashing.

If this all sounds difficult to you, remember this is a class with an instructor to show how it is done. The finished project will be approximately 5.5-by-7 inches. All the materials to make the basket will be provided, but each participant is asked to bring a bucket, scissors, old towel, awl, clothespins, pencil, measuring tape and packing tool, if you have one. Since the number of students is limited, please stop in or call the library at 655-4283 to register before April 13. The cost for the class is $26 per student.
