Speak up on bag issue
On Tuesday, April 14, the Freeport Town Council will be considering a plastic bag ban for carry-out bags, and wants to hear from residents on this issue. Single-use plastic bags are non-biodegradable and for the most part are non-recyclable (and clog recycle machines). They create serious pollution to our coastal waters, where they disintegrate into micro-plastics, which are a danger to marine life.
Even though we know this, we have become dependent on them, and often forget to bring our re-usable bags to the store. Can we change our awareness and habits? Other towns have plastic bag bans and they have reduced the amount of plastic bag use dramatically. The council wants to hear if this issue is important to us and what kind of a ban (and/or fee) Freeport should have.
Last year, two high school seniors brought this concern to the Town Council. Now it is time that they hear from the rest of us. I urge Freeport residents who would like their opinion heard (or seen as a group) to please come to the Town Hall Tuesday, April 14, at 6:30. Let’s help Freeport become a green town.

‘Sitting Pretty’ thank-you
I am happy to report the Sitting Pretty event helped raised almost $10,000 supporting The Port Teen Center. As a community we showed we cared, thank you. I want to share some highlights:
As you know we offered the opportunity to have a pre-auction sale at Claytons. Three pieces were immediately purchased. Congratulations to the Biberstein family, Caleigh Breton and Carli Lynch. The individuals who made these purchases were buying these three fish as gifts for close friends. What a compliment.
Kristin Bernhard’s sideboard, Zen, brought the highest bid at $500. But there was lively bidding on many items including the “group bid” where almost $600 was raised in $25 increments to re-gift a lovely rocking chair painted by Little Dolphin School and donated to Seeds of Independence.
We also had a large contingent of families painting together this year and this is really lovely. By my count we had a dozen or so families collaborating and producing some fine joint projects, as well as individual projects: The three Harrison girls (Rebecca, Lead and Naomi); Grace Abbot and mom Jennie Melville; Sebastian Meade and Katherine Meade; Grace and dad Chad Snyder; sisters Whitney Megquier Sam Jordan and mom Tracy Jordan; Josef and Paul and mom Kathy Biberstein; Hannah and mom Rachel Mills, Abby Brier and mom Kimberly Slade; Leigh and mom Jean Wyman; Hannah and mom Tammy Morrissey; Mac and Lucy Lloyd; Cynthia and Hallie Selinger, Kelly Smith. I hope I didn’t miss a family. This is amazing to me.
Many thanks again to all, and a special shout-out to Kimberly Medsker-Mehalic, Freeport High School art teacher. Kimberly is instrumental in engaging and following up with so many talented high school art students. Thank you, Kim.
Great job!

Kudos to Susan Mack
Thank you, Susan Mack, for your generous spirit and valuable resourcefulness.
I am new to the area and terribly lonely so I spend some of my life around the Freeport Community Center, seeing the friendly crew. I have many times meandered down the hall to visit and chat. What wonderful vibes I experienced getting to know her. I’ll miss her.
Knowing her, I think, is like knowing an 8-people person. She surpasses anything that I have seen in one person And I’m grateful that there are people like her who can do do do, go go go. She is so special to me and to so many people.
I know FCC will always be her second home and when I see her walk in I will feel a warm, safe, love energy. She so enjoys people and I hope to see her around even after she leaves.
