Red Claws end regular season on winning note
Maine (35-15) overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to edge host Iowa (26-24), 102-100.
James Young had 14 first-quarter points as the Red Claws led 36-30 after the first 12 minutes.
Maine went cold in the second quarter, shooting only 2 of 20 as the Energy took a 62-53 halftime lead.
Romeo Osby was 5 of 7 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers to fuel a third- quarter comeback.
Maine took a 78-76 lead to the fourth quarter, which saw four lead changes and four ties.
Osby finished with a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight boards, James Young had 19 points, including four three-pointers, and Omari Johnson added 14 points.
The Red Claws finished the season with a franchise-best 35 wins and will will enter the D-League Playoffs with the top overall seed and home court advantage thoughout. Playoff matchups will be announced Sunday.
TENNIS
MIAMI OPEN: Serena Williams won her eighth Key Biscayne title and remained unbeaten this year by drubbing Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
Williams became the fourth woman to win the same WTA event at least eight times.
HOCKEY
WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: The United States defended its championship with a 7-5 victory over Canada at Malmo, Sweden.
Brianna Decker and Kendall Coyne scored for the U.S. in the third after the Americans blew a 5-2 lead.
Finland beat Russia 4-1 for the bronze medal.
HORSE RACING
SANTA ANITA DERBY: Dortmund opened up on the final turn and romped to a four-length win in the $1 million Derby in Arcadia, California, keeping the colt unbeaten heading into the Kentucky Derby.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Dortmund ran 11/8 miles in 1:48.73 as the 3-5 favorite in the six-horse field.
TOYOTA BLUE GRASS: Carpe Diem seized the lead near the top of the stretch after stalking early leader Ocho Ocho Ocho and drawing away to a three-length victory in Lexington, Kentucky, securing his place as one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby.
WOOD MEMORIAL: Frosted won the $1 million race at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, and tops a possible five-horse entourage heading from New York to Louisville on May 2.
Frosted took the lead from 21-1 long shot Tencendur in midstretch and won by two lengths.
Both 3-year-olds are on their way to the Derby, as well as third-place finisher El Kabeir.
SOCCER
WORLD CUP WARMUP: Meghan Klingenberg scored an early goal before the U.S. women’s team busted the exhibition game wide open with three more in the second half for a dominating 4-0 victory over New Zealand in St. Louis.
PREMIER LEAGUE: Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam beat goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from inside his own half, but it couldn’t prevent Chelsea winning 2-1 to strengthen its grip on the top spot with eight matches to go.
MLS: Juan Agudelo and Lee Nguyen scored and New England beat host Colorado 2-0 on Saturday to extend the Rapids’ winless streak to 18 matches.

FOOTBALL: Florida State safety Tyler Hunter is out for the rest of spring practice after tearing the meniscus in his knee.
