WEST BATH — M. Wesley McPhee, 86, of Lemont Drive, died Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Bath on July 25, 1928, one of twin sons of Matthew and Catherine J. Cramond McPhee. He was educated in the Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1947.
In 1946, he earned his pilot’s license and was a member of the Maine Civil Air Patrol, and served in the Maine Army National Guard.
In 1950, he married Joyce L. Wentworth.
Wesley was employed as a marine draftsman for eight years at Bath Iron Works and went to work with the Supervisor of Shipbuilding U.S. Navy in Bath for 30 years and retired in 1985.
He was a Special Police Officer for 11 years with the Bath Police Department and was a graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. He became a Deputy Sheriff in 1985 with the Sagadahoc County Sheriff Department as a Patrol Deputy and later served as a Court Baliff, Court Officer, Court Security and Corrections Officer. He also worked for Volunteers of America during their alternative sentencing programs.
Wesley served many years as a Scout Leader (Scout Master, Neighborhood Commissioner, and District Commissioner) and attended the 1964 National Jamboree at Valley Forge, PA, as a Scout Leader with a group of Maine Scouts.
He was a member of the Bath United Methodist Church and a member of the Maine Sheriff Association; the West Bath Community Policing Program (WINS); a past member of the Bath City Council; a benefactor member of the National Rifle Association; and the Bath Rifle and Pistol Club 1957 State Pistol team championship.
Wesley enjoyed gardening, doing oil paintings, spending time with family and friends, including their rescued greyhounds: Bonnie, Lassie, and Dozey. He was also a bell ringer for many years during the Christmas season for the Salvation Army.
He is predeceased by his twin brother, Martin W. McPhee.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years Joyce McPhee; two sons, Rev. James T. McPhee of Maynard, MA, and David W. McPhee and his wife Susan of Lisbon; two grandsons, Jacob and Matthew; a niece and two nephews.
Visiting hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1 at the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. A graveside service will be announced later in the spring.
