The “Biddeford Forum,” a really good name for the seven people who showed up for Mr. Dutremble’s and Mrs. Valentino’s advocacy of more wonderful government to take care of the people. Aside from your reporter, five of the other six were members of the Biddeford Republican Committee. So much for constituent interest in this topic.
Very sadly, much of this is an attitude problem. A problem that is all too prevalent nowadays. It is the attitude that too many people want government to do something for them and too many politicians wanting government to take care of people. That is the very reason that we have a president trashing the Constitution and socializing everything in sight, most of all health care.
An in-depth analysis of all the things that government is doing will result in a finding that it is doing far too much. The very idea of the Founding Fathers that government should set men free to take care of themselves has been lost. Some may recall that it was the free market that made America great.
Mrs. Valentino spoke of “investments” in education. Well, I’m an engineer and I know that facts, statistics and graphs are indicators. When there was no government “investment” in education at all and no federal department of education, American education was among the best in the world. After the creation of a federal bureaucracy and throwing great gobs of money at education, America is now 13 out of 14 industrialized nations. It should be abundantly clear that we should remand complete control of all education to the local level.
Next, let’s take a look at track records. You can expect an organization to do the same in the future as they have in the past if they have not changed their principles. The Democrats made Maine a financial basket case. Our governor has turned that around by some stringent belt tightening. Of course, when you cut off the free milk from the government teat, some folks getting the free milk are going to moan and groan.
And, that wonderful sounding word “compromise.” Well, just what would be compromised? Would it be the basic Republican principles of limited government, limited spending, limited taxation and limited regulations? By golly, that’s it. I don’t want those principles compromised one bit. Our governor has fought tooth and nail to get Maine out of the mess the Democrats left him.
Remember a couple of great quotes: “Ask not what our country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country,” said President Kennedy. “Government is not the solution. Government is the problem,” said President Reagan.
All legislators would do well to have these quotes on their desks.
Dear Gov. LePage, please keep up the good work. Just maybe it is time for America to have a president that is an honest businessman rather than a lyin’, cheatin’, professional politician.
LePage for president!
Frank Novotny, Biddeford
