Dozens of hearty and adventurous Mainers took a plunge into the Atlantic ocean Saturday to raise money for Camp Sunshine.
The event took place at East End Beach in Portland Saturday afternoon. About 75 people participated in the event, which brought in about $10,000 into the organization, said Michael Smith, director of special events.
Camp Sunshine is a year-round retreat on Sebago Lake for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The organization has allowed thousands of children from around the world to enjoy a camp experience in Maine and given respite to the family members who care for them.
Saturday’s event was one of eight polar plunges scheduled in Maine this winter to raise money for the organization. The events have raised $352,000, surpassing the goal by $2,000, Smith said.
