‘Food train’ collection rolling

The annual “Climb Aboard the Food Train” drive is gearing up.

The drive, sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church, raises money and food donations for Westbrook Food Pantry. Special collection sites for food include Mister. Bagel, Walker Memorial Library, Husson College and the office at Westbrook Community Center. Jars for money donations are located in a hundred businesses and churches in the city.

The train will pick up all donations on the first weekend in May.

Community conversation on nutrition

On Thursday, March 19, Westbrook Community Services is hosting “A Community Conversation: Promoting Nutrition and Reducing Hunger,” at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center.

The event includes a screening of “A Place At the Table” and a panel discussion immediately following.”A Place At the Table” is a documentary about hunger and food insecurity in the United States. The panel discussion is relevant to hunger in Maine.

Light refreshments will be served from 4:45 p.m. and the screening starts at 5:30 p.m.

Seniors to dine, plan trips

Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a meal when it meets at noon on Monday, March 16, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The menu is chicken pot pie with crust, potato and vegetable; and a lemon meringue pie for dessert. Storyteller Vernon Cox will provide the entertainment.

The seniors are planning three trips,including one May 2-9 to Ireland, and the group is advising now is the time to submit payment for the trip. On May 19, the group goes to Lantana’s in Randolph, Mass., for a comedy, “The Late Night Catechism.”

The group plans another trip abroad to cruise the Rhine River, Oct. 1-9.

Woman’s club art show

The Westbrook Woman’s Club is hosting its annual student art show at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, in Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.

Guests are welcome and light refreshments will be served.

McAuley honor roll

Six Westbrook students have been recognized for academic achievement at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland.

Nicole Martin earned highest honors, and obtaining honors were Gabrielle P. Begos, Isis Clark-Schwellenbach, Ashley M. Connelly, Sam J. Siewertsen and Emily Silver.

Westbrook band Blues By Five is one of eight contestants participating in “Westbrook’s Got Talent,” taking place Thursday, March 12 from 6-9 p.m. at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center.
