When a dragon is discovered up on the Downs, one boy is not in the least surprised. But this particular dragon is not a bit like the ones in fairy tales, and his story will be told when a production class of “The Reluctant Dragon” starts at The Theater Project in Brunswick. The 6- week class session begins March 9 and runs through April 10, with performances on April 10-12. The class will meet Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4- 6 p.m.
Will the dragon become what the villagers expect him to be? Or will he help them see past his scaly exterior to the intelligent mind inside? The Theater Project is taking registrations from junior high aged actors who would like to participate in this production.
The Theater Project’s production classes begin with an introduction to improvisational techniques for making theater. These techniques are then applied to a story to create a production. At the end of the class and rehearsal process, actors present a short production that is costumed and performed on a simple set. Students learn to work together, to take responsibility for their work, to problem solve, to use their imaginations creatively, and to take pride in their work. The emphasis is on process, but the product is so much fun! There is no greater thrill than seeing the faces of the young actors on opening night as they wait to take the stage for the first time.
“The Reluctant Dragon” will be directed by Theater Project founder and Artistic Director Al Miller. The production is open to students in grades 6, 7 & 8, and registrations are currently being taken. The class fee is $250, and limited financial aid is available. Call 729-8584 or go to www.theaterproject.com for a registration form.
