Attracting multiple businesses to town in recent years, Gorham this month added a unique one to its tax rolls.
Maine Coast Kitchen Design relocated on Feb. 1 to its new home at 17 Little Wing Lane, off New Portland Road in Gorham. It moved from Commercial Street in Portland.
The company’s services include creating and installing stone countertops, custom cabinets, and renovating kitchens or a whole house.
“We are a design-build firm,” Tina Richardson, company president, said on Tuesday.
The business is open by appointment.
“Our business is a destination location,” Richardson said.
Richardson and her husband, Erik, live in Westbrook, where he is a native.
Maine Coast Kitchen Design bought its Gorham property. It has eight employees, who Richardson said she has carefully “cherry-picked.”
The company is planning an open house in May and is becoming a member of the Westbrook/Gorham Community Chamber.
“It is always great to have businesses locate in Gorham,” said David Galbraith, Gorham’s zoning administrator. “Very happy to have them join our business community.”
Richardson said her client’s feedback was a reason for moving to Gorham.
“Parking is tough in Portland,” Richardson said.
Her new site has ample parking. She completely renovated an existing 10,000-square-foot building that had previously housed a landscape business.
“I love it,” Richardson said. “It’s perfect for our clients.”
Renovation work included new interior walls. It was “a floor-to-ceiling makeover,” Richardson said. “We have a beautiful showroom.”
Displays in the lobby include examples of custom cabinets and a large variety of marble and granite offering choices for clients to see. The building also houses the company’s stone fabrication shop and warehouse.
“We cut the stone here,” she said.
The business creates and builds custom stone sinks, and, she said, some clients have asked for stone baseboards to match countertops.
“Anything related to stone we build,” she said.
Besides residential properties, Maine Coast Kitchen Design serves a variety of commercial businesses including financial institutions, hospitals and law offices. It did the stonework for Hollywood Casino in Maryland.
Richardson’s company work has been featured at properties in Arlington, Va.; New York; Wellesley, Mass.; and Maine communities like Boothbay Harbor, Harpswell, and Islesboro, where it finished a historic home.
